Frequently Asked Questions

Check out our answers to our most commonly asked questions

  • Chevron down What should I bring on a paddle board tour?
    • Flip flops or water shoes (required)
    • Hat
    • Sunglasses or croakies
    • Water bottle
    • Swimsuit
    • Sunblock
  • Chevron down Do I have to wear footwear while paddle boarding?
  • Yes, flip flops or water shoes are required on all of our activities for safety reasons. You’ll be walking around on stones, gravel, hot asphalt, and, most importantly, oysters. There are thousands of sharp oysters all around the water’s edge, so wearing flip flops while entering and exiting the water is required to avoid injury.

  • Chevron down What amenities do you offer?
  • Here at SUP Safaris we have full amenities available before and after your trip! Customers will find clean restrooms, as well as changing rooms, at their disposal. We offer free spring water to all of our customers and have snacks/sports drinks available to purchase. Lastly, stop by anytime to check out our shop filled with boards, apparel, and more!

  • Chevron down Can I bring my camera or phone on the SUP tour?
  • We don’t recommend bringing your phone or camera on the tour. As the old expression goes, “No matter how waterproof, how durable, or how expensive your phone may be – it still sinks like an anchor.” We wouldn’t want you to lose a phone, even if it’s in a waterproof case.

  • Chevron down Do you take pictures on the tour?
  • We do take a picture of the whole group together after the tour has arrived safely on land. Our “SUP shots” are always shared on our social media pages, making them easily accessible for all those who participated. That being said, we will not take pictures while out on the water; while we are great SUP instructors, unfortunately, we are not professional photographers.

  • Chevron down Can one person go on a tour?
  • Yes, if there are already other people on the SUP tour. If no one has booked for your tour time, we may offer private lessons at $75 or you can be rescheduled for the next available tour with clients on it.

  • Chevron down Where are you located?
  • Our address is:

    83 Center Street

    Folly Beach, SC 29439

There’s a handy tab located on the ‘Contact Us’ page that will direct you to our shop. If you have any questions give us a call!

  • Chevron down Do you have parking?
  • We have two dedicated drop-off/pick-up spaces in front of our shop that may be used for five minutes at a time. Please be prepared to drop-off and pick-up your party in front of the building prior to finding public parking. The spaces are located between our door and the Folly’s Best Rental’s Ford Bronco.
For long term parking, please find a public space at the boat landing (adjacent to our building) or along one of the many side streets. When parking at the public boat landing, you must be within the short-lined parking spots or the gravel area (Make sure you park to the left of the “no parking” sign.) Do not park in one of the trailer spots or you will be ticketed.
When coming on a weekend or major holiday, parking will most certainly be limited. If you feel public parking will be too difficult, please park in our lot at 114 East Indian Avenue and walk over to our shop.Click Here for detailed directions.

Please do not park in front of Folly’s Best Rentals or in the trailer spaces at the public boat launch. If at all possible, walk or ride a bike!

  • Chevron down What are the rules regarding public parking?
  • Parking on the streets of Folly Beach is free; so long as you are facing the flow of traffic and have all four tires entirely off the roadway. We encourage folks to use public parking whenever possible, because we do not have long term parking at our shop. Click Here to view detailed rules and regulations.

  • Chevron down What’s the best time of the day to see dolphins?
  • The resident bottlenose dolphins live in the river year-round so there’s always a chance to see them, however, they’re more active at low tide when they feed in a unique way called strand feeding. Please watch our strand feeding video on the homepage under What’SUP.

  • Chevron down Are there any alligators or sharks in the river?
  • NO! The American alligator lives in freshwater, while the Folly River is comprised of mostly salt. 99% of the time when you see a fin, it’s a dolphin or “dol-friend” as we like to call them. If we do spot a shark, they’re typically bonnet heads. This species is both small in size and typically feeds on oysters; so they’re rarely an issue.

  • Chevron down What happens if it’s raining?
  • We do go SUPing in the rain! Please be advised that all tours are subject to change and/or cancellation due to unsafe weather or conditions. We will do our best to reschedule your tour or in the event of a full cancellation, we will happily provide a refund.

  • Chevron down Can children join the tour without an adult?
  • Yes, if the parent or guardian completes and signs the legal guardian waiver, then children over 8 years old may join a SUP tour.

  • Chevron down Is there an age limit to join a paddle board tour?
  • 8 years old is our minimum age requirement to join a tour. If a younger child wants to join on the nose of your board, then give us a call to set up a lesson for your group.

  • Chevron down I have never paddle boarded before - can I still manage the tour?
  • SUPing is an incredibly easy sport to learn when you have great instructors. We’re the paddle board experts, so if you have no physical limitations regarding arm movement, knees to paddle in the safe position or balance-related issues, we can get you standing.

  • Chevron down Where can I SUP on a rental?
  • There are two options for places to SUP with us – The Folly River is the easiest and most convenient body of water to paddle in, located adjacent to our shop. Our second option is located on Folly Beach within the surf zone. Paddle surfing is recommended for intermediate to advanced paddlers unless it’s a flat day on the ocean. See our rentals page for more details.
